Artist statement
Monochrome is neither nostalgia nor decoration: it removes noise and isolates what remains when the image loses its reassuring function.
His works explore mask, labour, desire, madness, identity and departure as forms of contemporary conflict. Human figures, animals and cultural icons are drawn into a black-and-white language that does not simplify: it compresses tension to its essence.
Psicopittura
Art critic Andrea Domenico Taricco defined Gianolio's research as Psicopittura: painting that uses the image as threshold, mask and fracture.
The term identifies a black-and-white pictorial language that stages identities, roles, desires and inner or social conflicts. It is a critical definition of the artistic work.
Essential biography
Marco Giovanni Gianolio
Turin, 1978. Self-taught painter.
He works mainly in oil and acrylic on wood. His research centres on black and white as a conceptual choice and on images suspended between irony, unease and disenchantment.
His work brings together painting, contemporary imagery, animal figures, masks and popular symbols, transforming them into scenes of conflict between public image and hidden identity.
His works are held in private collections in Italy and abroad.

Philosophy of the work
Black is not the absence of light.
It is the presence of everything colour might have concealed.
Gianolio's works do not seek to comfort the gaze. They stop it before a fracture: between fable and disenchantment, role and identity, public surface and inner truth.
Black and white thus becomes a form of reduction and pressure: it removes the superfluous, isolates conflict and forces the image to reveal its ambiguity.
